But let’s be honest – it’s not always that easy. The cover is the face your book presents to the world, and who doesn’t want a good-looking face? A successful cover is enticing and engaging. It says, “Pick me up! Read me!” Think you might need some help to get it just right? We’d be happy to help you beautify.
WE CAN’T HELP YOU WRITE IT, BUT WE CAN MAKE YOUR BOOK BEAUTIFUL INSIDE AND OUT.
Because the layout and content of each book is unique, interior page design is not included in any of our setup packages, but can be purchased separately.
CAN I DO IT MYSELF?
If you want to try your hand at designing the inside of your book yourself, we say: go for it! We’ve written a comprehensive Do-It-Yourself Guide available for free download here. If you’d like a printed, bound version of this guide, it can be purchased in the store or online here.
HELP! I DON’T WANT TO DO IT MYSELF.
No problem! We’re happy to offer a solution. Please see below for more details.
IF YOU HAVE A BOOK OF PROSE:
We offer affordable in-house design services for books of prose (novels, short stories, essays, memoirs). We offer several templates in standard book sizes (5.125” x 8” and 6” x 9”) for you to choose from. Our designs include all the standard page elements -- title page, copyright page, table of contents, running heads, pagination, part titles, chapter heads, acknowledgements, and an About the Author page -- and you can pick and choose among them as your book requires.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Once you’ve selected your template, we will place your Microsoft Word, Open Office, Google doc, or rich text file (unfortunately, we cannot work with WordPerfect files at this time) into the design you choose. We then go page by page through your entire book to make sure it looks beautiful.
If you purchase one of our Interior Designs, we will give you an unbound set of your pages for you to review. After you've marked any edits on those pages and returned them to us, we will input them into the file before printing. Once you have your printed proof in hand, you'll have one more opportunity to check your manuscript, and to make any minor changes that do not alter the page flow of the book. Upon request, after completion of the interior page design, we will give you the final inDesign file and the final PDF, so you can use them anywhere else you need to.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Because of the labor involved, interior design usually takes about a month. We ask for payment of your interior design before we begin work.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Interior design prices are as follows (word counts include front and back matter):
- Under 50,000 words = $250
- 50,000 - 100,000 words = $300
- 100,000 - 150,000 words = $350
- Over 150,000 words: please contact us for a quote
- Photo placement in text = $25 for up to five photos
- No font substitutions may be made.
- Additional design alterations and corrections to the text, beyond those made in the unbound pages and initial printed proof, will be charged at our hourly rate ($40).
WHAT IF I HAVE A BOOK THAT IS NOT PROSE?
If your book requires a higher degree of customization (such as books of poetry, cookbooks, genealogical books, or art books) and you want assistance, we recommend contacting a freelance designer.
Click here to view a list of designers who are familiar with our practices and who we believe to be a good fit for our authors. Please note that any relationship formed with a freelancer is a third-party relationship completely separate from McNally Jackson. Fees, timelines, and methods of payment should be discussed with the freelancer directly.
Of course, you’re not limited to this list. You can hire anyone that you like—there are many online resources to help you connect with freelancers of all shapes, sizes, areas of expertise, languages, and so forth. (Or you may want to call upon your unsuspecting, tech-savvy neighbor, coworker, or family member!)
