Sam Lipsyte
Author of The Ask

Sam Lipsyte has always been a funny, engrossing writer, but with this latest novel the author of Home Land, Venus Drive and The Subject Steve is staking his claim as the city's singular source for mordant laughter.
The Ask is the story of Milo Burke, a more-or-less employed development officer at a small university whose further solvency depends on his wooing of one major, mysterious donor. The book discusses, with varying levels of terror, "work, war, sex, class, child rearing, romantic comedies, Benjamin Franklin, cooking shows on death row, and the eroticization of chicken wire."
Sam will be here to discuss the book with his celebrated editor at FSG, Lorin Stein.

| Saturday Storytime: Victorian Valentines |

Saturday, February 06 2010, 12:00pm - 1:00pm |

The Victorians gave us the first underground railway, the first postage stamp, rubber tires, "Jabberwocky," The Origin of Species, Pre-Raphaelites, the first lawn mower, the first comic strip, Dracula, paper lace, and Peter Rabbit. The Victorians also bequeathed beautiful Valentine images, including cupids, cherubic children, birds, flowers, clowns, and hearts. For Valentine’s Day, 2010, we’ll embellish these Victorian images with ribbons, sequins, glitter and lace to create unique, pop-up Victorian Valentines. For inspiration, we'll read vintage stories about Valentine's Day. Hosted by author and artist Yvonne Brooks. Ages 3 to 8. Free. Noon to 1 p.m.
