Robert Camuto
author of Palmento

Robert Camuto is a wickedly charming citizen of New York and France, but for his latest venture into the wilds of oephilia, Camuto introduces us to the vinyards of Sicily. It's a detailed tour of the wine culture of the region, as well as the best vintages. To accompany the discussion we will, naturally, be hosting a tasting of Sicilian wines provided by the excellent Chamber Street Wines. This is a rare free guided wine tasting by an expert on the region.

Geoffrey Becker
Author of Hot Springs (Tin House, $14.95)
Geoffrey Becker is our second Flannery O'Connor Prize winner this year (we collect 'em like baseball cards). He'll be reading from Hot Springs, his second novel, but is also the author of the collections Black Elvis and Dangerous Men, as well as the earlier novel Bluestown. He's an NEA fellowship recipient, and his work has been collected in Best American Short Stories. In fact, this novel also began as a short story but grew from there. He teaches writing at Towson University in Maryland.
Hot Springs is first a road novel, hot and tired and sometimes a little nauseated. Its pages should be printed on faux-wood panelling or sweaty pleather. Becker tells the tale of the doubt-harried Bernice, her equally uncertain boyfriend Landis, and their kidnapping of Bernice's own daughter, given up for adoption five years ago. The characters in this book are almost uniformly distasteful, but their story is irresistable. It's a marvel of craftmanship and I'm excited to welcome Becker in to read and discuss his book. You can get your own taste of his work here, or peek into his musical tastes here. |
