The early nineties was the time of the riot grrl. Girls across the country put down gender roles and classic feminist critiques, and picked up instruments, zines, and revolutionary politics. For years the best bands were almost exclusively girl bands.
Author Marisa Meltzer is the coauthor of How Sassy Changed My Life (Faber, 2007). Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Slate, Elle, and Teen Vogue. She lives in Brooklyn. She'll be here with the legendary Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile and editor Denise Oswald to talk about the book, the music and the movement.

•OUR ART & BEAUTY BOOK CLUB• Led by Adjua Greaves, this discussion group meets the second Wednesday of every month, at 7pm downstairs. For the next meetings on February 10th and March 10th, the book club will be discussing The Story of Art by E.H. Gombrich.
•OUR GRAPHIC NOVEL BOOK CLUB• Led by Angela Williams and Evan Narcisse, this discussion group meets the first Thursday of every month, at 7pm downstairs. At our next meeting on February 4th, the book club will be discussing Shortcomings by Adrian Tomine.
•KIDS STORYTIME• Resident storyteller Yvonne Brooks leads a storytime with with arts and crafts for kids ages 3 - 7, every Saturday at noon in the children’s section. Baby Storytime with storyteller Stewart Dawes takes place on Friday at 4:00 PM for ages 0 - 2.

  The SMITH Magazine collection Not Quite What I Was Planning made the six-word memoir a cultural phenomenon, with an outpouring of memoirs on themes from faith to hair to sex to food. By far the most common thread was love in all its forms, the focus of this new collection by writers famous and obscure. Join the editors and writers in an interactive celebration of "American haiku" on love just in time for Valentine's Day.
