Marisa Meltzer

Author of Girl Power: The Nineties Revolution in Music

with Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile

and Denise Oswald, editor and director of Soft Skull Press

Marisa Meltzer

The early nineties was the time of the riot grrl. Girls across the country put down gender roles and classic feminist critiques, and picked up instruments, zines, and revolutionary politics. For years the best bands were almost exclusively girl bands.

Author Marisa Meltzer is the coauthor of How Sassy Changed My Life (Faber, 2007). Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Slate, Elle, and Teen Vogue. She lives in Brooklyn. She'll be here with the legendary Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile and editor Denise Oswald to talk about the book, the music and the movement.

Second Annual Literary Halloween Party Print
Friday, October 31 2008, 6:30pm - 8:30pm

ImageFor the second year in a row, McNally Jackson hosts a Halloween party built around books! The evening begins with a Literary Costume Contest: dress as a character, author, or literary idea. Refreshments will be served, to the accompaniment of projections from horror comics anthology Nightmare Factory 2 (Fox Atomic) and signings by writers Joe Harris and Stuart Moore and artist Bill Sienkiewicz. Next is the Scary Story Slam, in which partygoers can compete to present the best horror story (literary or original) in under 3 minutes. Then the spotlight is on readings by Doug Dorst, author of Alive in Necropolis (Penguin); David Wellington, author of Vampire Zero: A Gruesome Vampire Tale (Three Rivers Press), and Stuart Moore, author of the forthcoming dark fantasy novel Breuckelen. Finally, winners of the costume contest and story slam will receive fabulous bookish prizes.

Kids are welcome to come to our Monster Mayhem party from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.
