NYU and the Destruction of New York, with Peter Carey, Fran Lebowitz, Kevin Baker and others
NYU's Sexton Plan for expansion, should it go forward, will destroy two acres of green space -- including the spectacular Sasaki Gardens and the Key Park children's playground -- replacing it with up to 2.5 million square feet of new building space. That amount, equivalent to the Empire State Building, will require at least 20 years of continuous construction in the streets of historic Greenwich Village.
There will be presentations and discussion. This also launches an original publication protesting the corporate takeover of the Village and New York as a whole, including work by Peter Carey, Lynne Tillman, Sarah Schulman, E.L. Doctorow, Philip Levine, Philip Glass, Joseph McElroy, Kenneth Lonergan, Eileen Myles, Andrew Ross, Arthur Nerensian, Roberta Gratz, Rochelle Gurstein, Dan Goldstein, Mindy Fullilove, Jan Lee, Ed Drooker, Marc Asnin, Ashley Gilbertson, Hubert Steed, Jules Feiffer, Kevin Baker and more.
Peter Carey, Fran Lebowitz, Kevin Baker, Joseph McElroy, Barbara Browning, Jessica Hagedorn, Sarah Schulman and Arthur Nersesian will be present at the event.
