David Downie in conversation with Stephane Kirkland
Enjoy an evening with scholar, multilingual translator, and tour guide extraordinaire of Paris and Rome, David Downie. With Stephane Kirkland, author of Paris Reborn.
This time David Downie's pilgrimage is to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, a journey which has lately gained a certain cachet in both books and movies. Their focus has almost invariably been on the Spanish part of this journey, culminating in an arrival at the cathedral of Santiago itself. In Downie's evocative new account, Paris to the Pyrenees: A Skeptic Pilgrim Walks the Way of Saint James, he and his wife, the photographer, Alison Harris, trace the pilgrimage trail in French, ending their journey on the border with Spain. Throughout, Downie's concerns are as much cultural and historical as they are spiritual. Managing an uncommon balance of historical appreciation and a relish for the coming thing, Downie treads age-old pathways to walk himself into a new life.
David Downie has called Paris home since 1986 and has lived in the Marais, and travel widely in France and Italy. He has written for Bon Appetit,Gastronomica, The Los Angeles Times and Town & Country Travel as well as the San Francisco Chronicle, Epicurious.com, and Salon.com. He is the author of Paris: Journey into the City,
three Terroir Guides as well as several cookbooks. He lives in Paris with his wife, Alison Harris, a photographer, and runs the "Paris, Paris Tours" blog site.
